When sending important documents, communicating with government agencies, or corresponding with overseas partners, there is always a risk of misunderstanding. Standard automatic translators often distort subtle nuances of meaning, and you may not realise this if you do not know the foreign language.
To eliminate such errors, professional linguistic expertise (for example, when preparing medical protocols or international legal claims) employs the back-translation (back-translation / reverse translation) method.
The essence of the method is simple: the source text is translated into the target language, and then another independent translator, who has not seen the original, translates the result back into the source language. Comparing the original text and the back-translation allows for an objective identification of any semantic distortions, ambiguities, or errors in the interpretation of terms.
Automatic Quality Control in Max Translator
Traditional back-translation is a time-consuming and costly process requiring the work of two specialists. In the Max Translator app, we have automated this quality control technology, making it instant and accessible to every user directly on their smartphone or computer screen.
Every time you enter text or send a voice message, our system performs three steps:
- Direct translation: The AI translates your phrase into the target language, taking into account the selected context and tone.
- Automatic back-translation: The system instantly sends the resulting foreign text for hidden re-analysis, translating it back into your native language.
- Semantic Scoring: The AI compares your original text and the back-translation, calculating the percentage of semantic match.
You see the result of the back-translation and the accuracy score as a percentage. If the meaning matches completely (a score above 85–90%), you can be confident that your conversation partner will understand you correctly. If the score is low, this is a clear signal that the phrase should be simplified or any ambiguous expressions removed.
How to Use Back-Translation
Using back-translation involves two stages.
1. Enable Back-Translation
![]() | Log in to your personal account. To do this, click the far-right icon in the website header. Select the "general settings" tab. Tick the "Perform back-translation" box. The translation will take place, but you will not see it. |
Note! "Back-translation" increases the translation time and cost.
2. Enable Display of Back-Translation
![]() | Click the "Enable back-translation display" icon in the header. Alternatively, log in to your personal account by clicking the far-right icon in the website header. Select the "general settings" tab. Tick the "Show back-translation" box. |
